The GEF SGP marked 5 years of work in Ukraine with a film presentation

It is the result of joint effort of a filming trip of volunteers and professional film-makers to different parts of Ukraine, where GEF SGP has contributed to the lives of communities.

IMG 5563More than 70 people, including representatives of grantees, CSOs, partners, NSC, supporters and UNDP colleagues gathered together to mark the major highlights of the GEF SGP’s work in Ukraine.

Mr Janthomas Hiemstra, Country Director of the United Nations Development Programme in Ukraine, opened the event with welcome speech. He emphasized on the variety of projects implemented by the Small Grants Programme in Ukraine, thanked local communities and NGOs for their dedicated involvement in environmental activities and expressed hope for the future productive cooperation.

Ms Tehmina Akhtar, Deputy Global Manager of the GEF Small Grans Programme, emphasized on efficiency of the Programme in Ukraine. She said words of gratitude to all grantees, partners, NSC members, UN Office colleagues and Programme team. 

IMG 5580Ms Olena Karetnyk, the author and director of the film, said that the filming process had been quite challenging as the team had travelled across the entire country to gather materials. She noted that as a result the viewers could both appreciate the beauty of Ukraine and become more environmentally aware.

The “Community Action - Global Impact” film does not only tell the story of the communities and environment in Ukraine, but highlights their role in shaping the environment in compliance with sustainable development principles. Since its launch in 2010, the Small Grants Programme supported 114 projects in Climate Change, Biodiversity, Land Degradation, International Waters, Chemicals, Waste Management and Capacity Development Focal Areas.
